Broadcast: Tuesday Meeting with KTRB
Had an excellent meeting with Jim Pappas GM of KTRB. We easily ironed out and agreed on all the particulars for 205 shows this season on 860 AM which by the way streams the signal so we will be able to link to them for all my shows live on the net...Right Off The Bat 17 spring training, 162 regular season, 26 Saturday shows.
We will confirm all on Thursday. So I'm pumped about the new station... Marty

Broadcast: A's on 860 AM KTRB
I received a number of inquiries today about Right Off The Bat and my participation on KTRB 860 AM in 2009. I am meeting with KTRB on January 6th to work out the details so our 12th season of Right Off The Bat should begin in spring training from Arizona.
Memories of the Game and Saturday's Inside Baseball will be back too.
Sounds like Jason Giambi is returning. Giambi and Matt Holliday will at least be interesting to watch in the 3-4 spots. Now who leads off and gets on base for these guys?

Stories from Fans: Rollie Fingers' Guide to Sporting a Sweet Handlebar 'Stache
Alejandro455 writes "Thought you guys & your readers would enjoy this interview with Rollie Fingers about caring for an most excellent Handlebar Mustache.
http://www.asylum.com/2008/12/15/rollie-fingers-guide-to-sporting-a-sweet-handlebar-stache/
Key excerpt:
"I was in Chicago at the airport and there was this couple in front of me and they've got a little 5-year-old girl. She keeps turning around and looking at me. And all the sudden, she turns around and kicks me right in the shins. Her parents turn around and say, 'Honey, what are you doing!' and she looks up at me and says, 'Why were you so mean to Peter Pan?' She thought I was Captain Hook. It was right around the time that movie, 'Hook' came out. I just started busting out laughing. I was just glad she didn't have pointed shoes." "

Daily Dish: A's Need a New Bench Coach
Congratualtions to Don Wakamatsu for landing the Mariners managing position. I was on XM radio last week and explained that Wakamatsu would be a terrific choice for the Seattle job because he combined the A's wait for a good pitch philosophy with good old baseball sense that he learned from Buck Showalter while he was in Texas. Wakamatsu also has tremendous knowledge about the inner workings of the AL West from his tenures in Texas and Oakland.
Now the A's should make a call to their former manager Art Howe who has spent the last two years as Ron Washington's bench coach and mentor in Texas. Howe led the A's to the playoffs, won more than 100 games twice in Oakland, and developed the core of the A's team that last enjoyed success in the Bay Area.
Bob Geren is secure in his job. Howe poses no threat and would be a tremendous asset to the staff. He gets along with the press extremely well, knows the ins and outs of running a 'pen, knows the AL West intimately, and subscribes to the A's understanding of how a game plan is constructed.
The A's should make the call and add Howe to the staff right now.

Daily Dish: A's for 2009 and Beyond
Batter Up October 5th, 2008
As the playoffs unfold it is a good time to look at the type
of player it takes to be successful over the course of the 162 game-season.
A good starting point is to recall the players the A’s have
had on the roster as they made the playoffs five times since 2000.
The A’s have
built championship teams before and are trying to do so again.
The club has featured pitchers such as Mark Mulder, Tim
Hudson, Barry Zito, Jason Isringhausen, Billy Koch, Keith Foulke (in his
prime), and Cory Lidle.
On the offensive side Jason Giambi, Johnny Damon,
Miguel Tejada, Eric Chavez, Ramon Hernandez, and Jermaine Dye have all been in
the playoffs as an Athletic.
Names we hear about in today’s playoffs include Manny
Ramirez, Andre Ethier, Russell Martin, Alfonso Soriano, Derek Lee, Ryan Howard,
Jimmy Rollins, Kevin Youkilis, David Ortiz, Jim Thome, Evan Longoria, Prince
Fielder, Mark Teixeira, and Vladimir Guerrero.
When October baseball rolls around, the “varsity” pitching
staff dominates the playoffs. Not the 3-4-5 starters, but “real” pitchers win
in October. Josh Beckett, Derek Lowe, James Shields, Carlos Zambrano, Mark
Buehrle, CC Sabathia, John Lackey, and Cole Hamels will all be counted upon by
their teams to star this fall.
How close are the A’s to regaining the type of player it
takes to be one of the eight teams to make it to postseason play? What are the
prospects for a successful 2009 season in Oakland? What players should the A’s
target as potential free agents? Trades?
First the A’s have to determine how close they are to
developing players who can be consistent winning performers over the long
season.

Daily Dish: Forget the Stats...Angels-Cubs Should be in the Series
Batter Up Sept. 28th, 2008
October baseball is finally here. Now the question becomes
which of the eight survivors of baseball’s grueling 162 game schedule is best
qualified to win eleven games in the post season and become the grand old
game’s 2008 world champion.
Last week I looked at the numbers in the key offensive,
defensive, and pitching categories and concluded that based on the statistics
which I considered most relevant the Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox would meet
in this year’s World Series.
This week let’s go behind the numbers and analyze the teams
and the key players who should make a difference once the division series get
underway this Wednesday in Anaheim where the Angels host the Wild card winners,
the Boston Red Sox.
To win a championship under the current format a team must
have at least two legitimate starting pitchers, a closer who gets the job done
with a minimum of stress, and hitters in the 3-4 spots in the batting order who
make you sit up and take notice when they come to the plate.
Also it’s important to win on the road. Every team in the
playoffs has had a terrific season winning games in their home park. It’s
critical to have a manager that can run a club making key decisions as playoff
momentum shifts from game to game and from inning to inning.
