Without Chandler's approval, the 15 owners who voted against Robinson's agreement with the Brooklyn Dodgers, would have prevailed, in keeping Jackie out of major league baseball. Lester Rodney Part 1 - Click to Listen Description:
Lester Rodney is one of the best sportswriters of all time. Beginning in the mid 1930's Rodney was the only baseball writer who continuously urged the powers in baseball to allow Black's to play in the majors. Rodney covered major league baseball for over 25 years on a daily basis. Branch Rickey received much of the national attention for bringing Jackie Robinson to the Dodgers organization in 1946, but without Rodney fanning the flames, the issue wouldn't have been in the public eye. Why hasn't Rodney received more attention for his work? Rodney was the sports editor for "The Daily Worker", the communist paper, causing the historians to overlook his contributions until just recently. I met Rodney this past fall thanks to Irwin Silber, author of "Press Box Red", Rodney's story, and historian Jules Tygiel.
